A Letter to My Dog On Her 8th Birthday

Dear Gina,

Eight already? Really? With your puppy energy and petite size, people think you’re 8-months-old, not years. Yet, I’ve witnessed an emotional maturity in you these past couple of months that’s new.

No, I’m not talking about your new grey furs under your chin. We’ve both been through a lately, and I probably have a few greys too. You’re an only dog now, and you often seem more contemplative. Your behavior has me sometimes wondering if you’re taking care of me instead of visa-versa. It appears that you sometimes just don’t know what to do with yourself at home when we’re not engaging in an activity. I’ve only recently realized what a calming presence Sanchez had on you. I remember when I first adopted you and brought you home. I was playing the piano, and it was Sanchez that taught you the rules. When I played the piano, you were to go to your dog bed. He demonstrated and you followed.

I can’t tell you how much it warms my heart that you find great solace in your iCalmDog. I often wonder what you are thinking when you listen. Do you know that it’s me playing the piano? Are you meditating to the soothing soundtracks?

It’s hard to imagine that there was room for our bond to grow, but it feels like it strengthened through our shared loss of Sanchez. I know you miss your snuggle time with him. Me too. But, I’ve loved our extra cuddles together.

Hey, and congrats on your new agility titles too. Good girl Georgina MX MXJ OF MAD SAM JM GM RM CGC! Your exuberant spirit got me back in the game, and it’s so much fun being your agility partner.

I know you’ve been loving your new frisbee and our extra time at the beach lately. Nothing makes me happier than experiencing your joyful spirit near the water.

Shhh, you don’t know this yet, but you know that training on the boogie board we’ve been doing at home and on the paddle board at the beach? Well, that’s all in prep to get you on the water with me.

I’ve been reading How to SUP With Your Pup by Maria Schultz. Since we both share such a huge love for the water, I have a feeling this might be our next sport we enjoy together. What do you think? Wanna try? Ok. Hop on!

And, you’re doing such a great job as our new mascot. I know you have big paws to fill, but look at you! Sanchez taught you well, and he would be so proud.

As the sun sets on your 8th birthday, I’m feeling so grateful for our day, years, and life together. I know that how ever many birthdays you get, it will never be enough. So, we’ll continue to make each one special and create many memorable moments in-between them. Thank you for helping me heal my heart these last two months. You are such a blessing in my life.

With all my love,
Lisa (a.k.a. Your Dog Mom)

Happy Birthday to Gina. We recently lost one of our cuddle girls. My Misty has a iCalm in
every room and I have one for travel. We play

So great that you two are learning a new things. A new relationship bond and new memories. I believe with all my heart, that dogs have memory of love and companionships they build. I believe that she remembers Sanchez every time she listens to music. Happy Birthday Gina and many more to you and your Mom.
