Why Music for Cats?

Since the 2008 release of Through a Dog’s Ear music, requests for music specially designed for cats have been constant. As a research-based organization, we’ve demurred; there has been scarce scientific examination of music and sound with cats. However, recent research by Dr. C.A. Tony Buffington (2011, Ohio State University) caught my attention. While studying feline interstitial cystitis (a leading cause of euthanasia), researchers discovered a primary cause of this ailment: stress! Change in the cat’s physical environment—strangers, different food, additional animals, loud noises, illness, etc.—is a major contributor. Cats prefer their homes to be stable and consistent. Acute feline stress turns into chronic irritation, manifesting in disease and behavioral challenges.

Through a Cat’s Ear, Volume 1 is designed to reduce stress in a chaotic or unsettling environment. My sonic toolkit originates from sound therapies with neurodevelopmentally-challenged humans in which tone, tempo, and pattern are considered. Frequency ranges have been adjusted to a cat’s auditory range and a new technique called sonic anchoring is included.

– Joshua Leeds, producer

What is the difference between Vol. 1, 2 & 3?

In Music for Calming, Vol. 1 our goal was to create calm – often in non-consistent environments. We are “calming” experts, with both people and dogs. We use natural and clinically proven sonic techniques to slow primary body pulses.

In Music to Stimulate, Vol. 2, our goal is to arouse cognitive and physical function. Using the principles of resonance, entrainment, and pattern identification, we go in the opposite direction from Calming. In this soundtrack, we employ high frequency instrumentation, complex melodic patterns, increasing tempi, and frequency modulation.

In Music to Stimulate, Vol. 3, our goal is to ease noise phobias. We strive to build a conditioned response of positive association for kittens and cats of all ages.

Consider the Through a Cat’s Ear series an adjunct to wonderful enrichment programs. Used together, you can exercise your cat’s innate animal instincts while keeping her safe and sound – purring on the corner of your bed and chasing your playful toes.

  1. Question

is there a difference between the dog and cat music? I have almost all of your dog music and I just sampled the calming cat music and it sounds the same to me. I have both dogs and a cat. PS: I love the dog music and it calms me down too!

    • Karen – Yes, while there are some similarities, there also is a primary difference. Music for Calming (Cats) includes an anchoring theme that center around research by Dr. Tony Buffington. It states that cats absolutely require consistency in their environment. We’ve interpreted that to mean “in their sound environment”, and we’ve created an anchoring theme that keeps coming back. In addition, frequency, modulation is used on Through a Cat’s Ear.

  2. 5 out of 5 This music did wonders with my cat during loud construction noise!

Through a Cats Ear worked wonders for my cat during construction. I confined him in a bedroom, and put your wonderful CD on “repeat”. Construction consisted of jack hammering and removing a tile floor, building a subfloor, then installing an oak floor. Needless to say, this was all very noisy and took several days.

Simba, the Abyssinian, came thru it all beautifully. He didn’t like the noise, but he slept a lot, ate his food, and acted like a normal cat. I was very pleased, as I had considered boarding him during the construction days. Thanks to your wonderful “cat music”, he stayed calm and I did not need to disrupt his life by boarding which would have been traumatic.

By the way, I love the music. Thinking of using it myself to help with sleep issues.

  3. 5 out of 5 Works like a magic pill.

I was a little skeptical at first this would work when I introduced Through a Cat’s Ear music into a 2-cat household of one one my pet sitting clients. I witnessed the positive results with an astonishing result with one very sociable cat and one true frightened cat. Mr. Friendly Cat slowed down, climbed onto his scratchpad, began incrementally leaning, til he couldn’t hold up his head any longer, closed his eyes, then fell asleep. As I quietly rose to leave, I turned around to see Mr. Fraidy Cat, calmly sitting in the hallway listening to the music — this was the first time that I had actually seen him after petsitting for that household for almost 2 years! I bet your felines will be so happy to hear such soothing sounds too.
